BOONEVILLE WOMAN'S CLUB AND FOURTH
AND FIFTH GRADE STUDENTS MAKE
VALENTINES FOR VETERANS
by
Laura Cartwright
The Booneville Woman's Club has a project of which they are so proud.
They are proud because they are helping veterans to be happier, and they are at
the same time teaching young children to respect the veterans of all wars.
Both the Fourth and Fifth Grades in the Booneville School System have done
something for veterans at the Veterans Hospital in Jackson, Miss. At this
particular time, with war going on, it "just seemed more fitting to help those
men who had helped their country," one of those in the project was heard to
say. The project was to make valentines for 100 veterans at the Veterans
Hospital. The students did their own valentines - however they wished
them to be. And they included a message - some short and some a little
longer. One student wrote (in her own words and spelling), "To an inchanting
gentleman, Be my valentine" - and inside it read, "Roses are red, Violets are
blue, I dumped my boyfriend, So I could be with
you." That one will go to a 90-year old veteran in Jackson!
Mrs. Kim Eubank and Taylor Dees
spearheaded the Fourth Grade valentine-making drive at Anderson Elementary
School. Mrs. Edith Wilhite and John Allen spearheaded the project for the
Art students at Howard Long Middle School.
The Booneville Woman's Club's special project for Veterans is seeing that
valentines are sent to veterans at the Miss. Veterans Hospital. Ann Landers
suggested this project and published a number to call for information as to
where to send them. The Woman's Club has been "cooperating" with these young
people since John Allen has entered the
Booneville School System, and has continued it each year as he went from grade
to grade. Another student, Taylor Dees, wanted the Fourth Grade to continue
this project at Anderson Elementary.
The Booneville Woman's Club commends these young people for doing such an
excellent job, and extends their appreciation to them. Appreciation is also
extended to Principals Jody Presley, Rick Coggins and Beverly Hill. The
Booneville Woman's Club is a part of the GFWC/MFWC, and is interested in
honoring veterans as much as they can - including making
those veterans in Veterans Hospitals a little bit happier.

BOONEVILLE WOMAN'S CLUB HAS BREAST CANCER COMFORT PILLOW
PROJECT
by
Laura Cartwright, Immediate Past President, Booneville Woman's Club
Submitted November 6, 2002
The Booneville Woman's Club launched a project of making breast cancer comfort
pillows for breast cancer victims in their area. Members made 500 - cut,
sewed, and sewed again - small, very comfortable pillows from materials donated
for this particular project.
The pillows were disbursed to local doctors' offices, the Baptist
Hospital/Booneville, as well as the Cancer Center and Breast Care Center at
Tupelo.
The newly formed Booneville Juniorettes assisted with the project. One of their
meetings was devoted to learning more about breast care from a Woman's Club
member, Mary Dean Stone, and stuffing all the pillows that the Woman's Club
members had cut and sewed.
Louise Sanders is the Booneville Woman's Club President and the Sponsors of the
Juniorettes are Woman's Club members, Christi Allen and Angie Via.

The May meeting of the Thursday Club was a fun and fellowship time when spouses and friends were invited to attend a salad and dessert supper. During the meeting an installation of officers for 2002-2004 was held with Kay Young, Past President District V, in charge of the program. Officers for the new year are Betty Gomillion, President; Debbie Rushing, President-elect; Geralyn Freeny, Secretary; Teresa Withers, Treasurer; Hilda Ann Spence, Historian; Karen Freeny, Parliamentarian;
and Kay Young, Reporter.
The Thursday Club was organized in 1947 and federated in 1948. The red rose is the club's flower and the colors are red and white. The club's motto is "Arise, activate your dreams." There are presently 19 members. Invitations are being sent out this month to eight prospective new members. The meeting time for the club members is the first Thursday in each month at 7:00 p.m. The meetings are held in the homes of club members or at the Walnut Grove Library.
The first event on the agenda for the year will be a fund-raiser for an annual $500 scholarship. Tickets are now being sold for an "opportunity to own" one of Gail Pittman's chip/dip pottery pieces in the Christmas pattern. The pottery will be given to the lucky ticket holder on Walnut Grove Day on August 31, 2002. In addition to selling tickets, the club members will bake beans and serve barbecue chicken plates at noon on Walnut Grove Day. Proceeds from the sale of the chicken plate lunches
will be used for other club projects.
