GFWC-MFWC
President’s Special Project
“And
they said, Let us rise up and build. So they strengthened their hands for
this good work.” Nehemiah 2:19
MFWC Board Members worked on the Habitat House on the
afternoon of June 30, 2007 following the Summer Board Meeting.

Habitat for Humanity Chairman; and Merle McLeod, MFWC Treasurer
On December 14, 2006, these MFWC officers and
chairman attended the Metro-Jackson Habitat for Humanity’s Celebration
Luncheon of the progress and promise of the Nehemiah
Project and 20 years of building.
The Nehemiah Project
calls people to symbolically “rebuild the walls” around the City of
Jackson by rebuilding neighborhoods, one house at a time.
Since 1986,
Metro-Jackson Habitat has built 365 houses in the Jackson area. They also
have 20 houses currently in progress in Hancock County.
Governor Barbour was the
keynote speaker at the luncheon and spoke on the tremendously giving
spirit of Mississippians.

SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT JUDY MARTIN
SEPTEMBER 28, 2006
Dear Federation
Friends –
I am thrilled to
tell you that we have a date for the
Habitat dedication
of the two Women Build houses in Jackson.
It is
Monday, October 16,
at noon. We will probably dedicate the New Neighbor
house on Walnut Street first (this is the one that was funded by Lowe’s
that we worked on) and then walk over to the Federation House on
Chestnut Street and dedicate it.
A
carpool/caravan will
leave Headquarters at 11:20, if you would like to
park your car there and ride over. (There is not much parking in the
neighborhood where we are going, and we would do better to take as few
cars as possible.)
Please come, and please help spread the word for everyone to come.
If you need directions or any other information, please feel free to
contact Lynda Essary or me.
Thank you so much
for helping to make the dream of home ownership come true for two very
special families. It took federated clubwomen from all over Georgia and
Mississippi to get the job done. A lot of hard work and love went into
every square foot. I am continually humbled to be a part of this
wonderful organization of caring and capable women.
THANK YOU!! THANK
YOU!!! THANK YOU!!!!
Much Love,
-- Judy
GFWC-MFWC 2006-2008 President Judy Thomas Martin has selected "Habitat
for Humanity" as her special project. Habitat for Humanity is a
Christian based organization whose purpose is to build and sell decent,
affordable housing at no profit and no interest to families who need
better housing. Mississippi Federation of Women's Clubs will partner with
Metro- Jackson Habitat affiliate. The 2006-2008 administration's goal is
to collect $32,000 to sponsor one of the three "Women Build" Homes:
(1) one in Jackson; (2) a New Neighbor house across the street for a
Hurricane evacuee who is relocating to Jackson; and (3) one on the coast.
Habitat Jackson's 8th Women Build is a building project that gives women
the opportunity to fund and construct a Habitat home for a family in need.
MFWC will support this program financially and will provide labor as part
of an all women work force that will build these houses in 20-25 member
crews. The homeowners will work side by side with the volunteers.
The two houses in
Jackson are being built June-August at 731 and 738 Chestnut Street
in Jackson, across the street from each other.

The Georgia Federation of Women's Clubs presented an astoundingly generous gift of $32,000. As requested by the Georgia ladies, this money will be used to fund a Habitat for Humanity House built entirely by women. MFWC is helping to pay for and provide labor for the Metro-Jackson Habitat for Humanity Women Build project. None of this would have been possible without the support of our friends in the Georgia federation. |

"And build we will! We will build the one thing that can bring light into the dark aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. We will trade in our white gloves for work gloves, our high heels for hammers, and we will do what women always do - that which must be done. We will build houses for our friends and neighbors who are without."

A Message from Lynda Essary, Chairman MFWC President's Special Project: Habitat for Humanity
This is a very special project for me and near and dear to my heart. To be able to help someone to fulfill the American Dream is wonderful. To have someone working right next to you while you and others are working on the home is awesome.
We are selling the bracelets and earrings for Habitat. I still have some if anyone needs any. I would like to thank Diane Rouse for the donation of a handmade quilt for us to buy “Opportunities to Own”. This quilt will be given away at the State Convention in April, 2007. Also, I will be attending the District Conventions and asking for your support with our needs for Habitat for Humanity. So there will be plenty of time for you to tell all of your club members about the beautiful handmade quilt and other items. There will be some surprises offered at your District Conventions also. You never know what they might be and you do not want to miss out on them.
Please note that the report form for the MFWC President’s Special Project, Habitat for Humanity, is in your Handbook and is also available on the website Forms/Guidelines page. You should also cross report under Helping Hands in the Home Life Department.
As you know, MFWC
is partnered with Metro-Jackson Habitat for Humanity.
However, if you cannot come to Jackson to work, there are Habitat
affiliates near you that can use your help. Contact them and they can
tell you how you can help with the “builds” that they have or will have.
It is not just Metro-Jackson Habitat - it is Habitat anywhere in the state
of Mississippi. We are in need of help everywhere for Habitat. I want to
thank everyone that has been working in their home town for Habitat or
that will be working in their home town.
We have had
approximately 75 volunteers for the Metro-Jackson ‘Women Build’ so far,
and the number will be over 100 by the time the two houses in Jackson are
built. This does not count the ladies that have provided lunch or will be
providing lunches. The dedication for our federation house will be in the
fall, and I will let everyone know the date when it is set. We are still
hoping to build the house on the coast this fall, but the date has not
been set and will be announced when we have the date. I would like to thank everyone who has worked or provided lunches for the Metro-Jackson Habitat. The work is hard and hot when you are working out side either with a hammer or serving the lunches. I would also like to thank you for the many, generous contributions of household items that were made at Summer Institute. I know that, for years to come, our homeowners will use and enjoy all that the members of MFWC have provided. I can not tell you how much President Judy Martin and I appreciate all that you have done and will do in the future for Habitat.
